JBA were appointed as Landscape Architects following an Invited Design Competition to redesign West Square, a high profile space at the entrance to the college. The space is enclosed by a range of buildings including an award winning IT Lab and students union.
The square was designed as a new focal and social space. A geometric design of tectonic plates and water 'geyser' (inspired by maths, science and learning), was used to unify the space. A fault line defined the licensed area for the Students Union Bar.
Robust contemporary materials were selected for intensive use and low levels of maintenance. Key issues included underground services and retention of existing trees. Phasing of construction was essential to ensure continued safe access to surrounding buildings.
Prior to completing West Square, JBA completed works associated with a number of new student residences and other public realm improvements also on behalf of QMWC.
