Summary:
Crest Nicholson and Linden Homes commenced proposals to redevelop historic paper mill. James Blake Associates were appointed to prepare landscape proposals for a mixed use development including playable open spaces, canal, roof gardens, war memorial and listed Nash House. Thanks to the newly developed play and open spaces strategy JBA were able to turn a previously rejected development into an examplar scheme, which was received by the Local Planning Authority with great
enthusiasm.
The proposal has been developed based on close co-operation with other consultants, Environment Agency and Conservation Officer in order to overcome multiple constraints.
The ground art has been used as part of the playable space tool as well as to reference historical importance of the listed building, the war memorial and the past glory of mill during the industrial revolution era.
The old canal will be restored to become a magnificent and recognizable landmark with a prestigeous promenade on one side and an ecologically important bank on the other side, with reed beds and native planting.
Play areas are not limited to the enclosed spaces with play equipment, but are a part of the wider concept unified by ground art.
Roof gardens have been proposed over underground car parking creating semi-private areas with raised planters, artificial turf and seating.
