Summary:
The Bede Estate project, undertaken as one of JBA's first major design commissions, was implemented in 1989. The project was concerned with the environmental improvement of a deprived housing estate in Bow, East London.
Key components:
- £130,000 contract value £130
- Installation of Play area and MUGA
- Defining space and creating shelter with natural surveillance
- Humanising an austere hard dominated landscape
Design concept:
To Create private gardens in order to reduce crime and client maintenance commitments
- To create a communal garden with play space (for a range of ages) for high-rise dwellers.
Key difficulties:
- Vandalism on site
- Obtaining the belief in a better environment of the local residents
