JBA was initially appointed by the East Suffolk Crematorium Company to design a new crematorium for Ipswich in conjunction with Hugh Thomas (architect). The site comprised an existing plantation woodland, Porters Covert, Nacton.

A previous planning application for the scheme had been refused. For the new planning application in 2005, JBA designed the masterplan, informed by extensive ecological, arboricultural and landscape surveys ensuring the retention of mature trees. JBA coordinated the preparation of an Environmental Statement addressing archaeological, ecological, transport, air quality and landscape issues. Suffolk Coastal District Council granted consent in 2006.

JBA were subsequently instructed by Bereavement Management Services to discharge anumber of precommencement conditions including a detailed hard and soft landscape scheme, tree protection and woodland management plan. The conditions were successfully discharged enabling commencement on site in 2010.

The scheme includedthe crematorium, access and car parking areas, memorial gardens, swales and drainage ponds, with native structural planting establishing and edge to the retained woodland. Materials and planting were selected to reflect the rural woodland setting. The existing woodland areas were enhanced through the creation of new rides and glades to envance biodiversity.
