Coes Meadow Doorstep Green

Play Area - Coes MeadowCoes Meadow

JBA was commissioned after winning an invited competition to design a new recreation and community resource for the village of Bulmer, Suffolk.

Designs for Coes Meadow Doorstep Green were led by feedback from the village obtained via a series of questionnaires and public exhibitions. Our work included engaging with the Trust, Bulmer Parish Council and the local community; preparation of sketches followed by detailed designs; cost and phasing options; and applying for grant funding.

The scheme was awarded funding by the Countryside Agency's Doorstep Greens Initiative in 2003. JBA oversaw the tender process and implementation, administering the contract until its completion in 2005.

Coes Meadow incorporates circular pathways, play equipment, a basketball area, amenity space and a small informal car park. Planting and improvements to the existing pond enhanced the biodiversity of the site. The design and materials responded to the rural character of the village (a Conservation Area), with detailed consideration to the ongoing maintenance of the site. The scheme is owned and managed by the Trust.
